DigidownI FAQs

On the rear of all standard digital tachographs there are four 8-way connectors. These are easily identified by their colours:

  • Connector A is white and provides power to the tachograph. It is also used for CAN1, the main control bus for the vehicle. For safety and good operation of the vehicle, the DigidownI does not use CAN1. However, a connection to this plug is required to power the DigidownI.
  • Connector B is yellow and connects to the speed sensor in the gear box. DigidownI does not use this connector.
  • Connector C is red and contains CAN2, the secondary vehicle control bus. This is expressly provided for remote downloading and is isolated within the tachograph. Activities on CAN2 cannot affect the operation of the vehicle. This is the primary connection used by the DigidownI.
  • Connector D is brown and provides some real time data that can be useful to collect.

The cable you receive with your DigidownI will connect to the white, red and brown slots on the back of the tachograph. Use the back-to-back white connector to reconnect the main white cable to the tachograph.

If you discover other devices plugged into the red or brown connections, or some other connection situation, please contact us and we can provide you with appropriate cables.

Some VDO tachographs have rear panel authentication disabled, but can be set up to authenticate via the front panel. Please contact us to request a front panel cable and VDO front panel activation card.

Download and install the DigidownConnect app

Get it on Google Play

Run the DigidownConnect app on your phone. Follow the set up instructions to select your preferred language, name and email address. Setup and check the Bluetooth connection to your DigidownI (the pairing code is 1234).

Please note only Android™ and Blackberry phones running OS version 2.0 or later are compatible.

If you cannot download the app from Google Play, you can download the apk file. On your phone's web browser, go to m.digidown.net. Download and install the DigidownConnect app.

Android, Google Play and the Google Play logo are trademarks of Google Inc.

Please see our DigidownHost User Guide. If you have not been provided with DigidownHost software, please contact us.

Start the DigidownConnect app on your mobile phone and select 'Run'. The app will check your internet connection and scan Bluetooth connections for your DigidownI. Select your DigidownI from the list - it will be identified by the registration of your vehicle. If this is the first time you have connected to this DigidownI, you will need to enter the pairing code (1234).

Once you have successfully connected, select 'Download' and choose your required download type.

The DigidownI will remotely authenticate with your company card on your DigidownHost computer.

The DigidownI will download the file to its internal memory. The downloading of data from a VU can take a considerable length of time, potentially in excess of 30 minutes depending on the options selected. Using 'Latest VU' can reduce the download time considerably. Downloading a driver card usually takes only a few minutes to complete.

The DigidownI stores one tachograph download and one set of driver card downloads on the internal memory. If a second download is done, the files will be overwritten. It is recommended that you also upload the files to your smartphone when you download them, to prevent them being lost.

The DigidownI app has three controls:

  • All VU - pressing this causes the DigidownI to download all the data stored in the VU.
  • Latest VU - pressing this causes the DigidownI to download only the latest data within the VU.
  • Card - pressing this causes the DigidownI to download the data from the driver card (if any) inserted into the VU.

The 'Latest VU' function is user programmable according to user needs. A fleet operator might choose to download the last 2 or 3 months of activities. An enforcement officer might choose to download the last 8 or 28 days of activities. For accident analysis or route tracking the user might choose to download the detailed speed file (last 24 hours of driving) or in the case of VDO tachographs the 4Hz speed data or the last 168h (7 days) of detailed speed.

Once you have successfully connected, select 'Upload' and choose what kind of file you would like to upload. The DigidownI stores one tachograph download and one set of driver card downloads (depending on how many cards were in the tachograph when the download was selected).

You can send uploaded files to any email address. This is programmed into your app during setup and can be changed at any time.

The DigidownI also supports ftp and http to send your files directly to your central office, fle storage or analysis bureau. Contact us for more details.

The DigidownI is a remote downloading device, therefore can only be used with tachographs where this has been enabled. Tachograph versions VDO 1.3 and later, and Stoneridge 7.1 and later with remote downloading options turned on are suitable for use with the DigidownI.

Some VDO tachographs have rear panel remote authentication disabled. A front panel cable and VDO front panel activation card are available to purchase for VDO tachographs with front panel remote authentication.

Please ask your workshop or contact us if you are unsure.

In order to view and analyse your files, you will need appropriate tachograph analysis software. Please talk to your dealer for more information.

Files downloaded by the DigidownI are in the precise format specified in EU regulation 3821/85 Annex 1B Appendix 7 and thus should be readable by any drivers' hours software package which is otherwise capable of handling data from digital tachographs.

Each time a DigidownI saves a tachograph data file that file is given a name. The format of this name is not specified in any EU tachograph regulations. The authorities in France and Spain have defined file name formats which must be used in those countries. Elsewhere there is no specific requirement for any particular name format but there are several commonly used name formats.

Once you have successfully connected, select 'Advanced'. From here you can change the file name format of your downloaded files and the options downloaded by the 'Latest VU' download.
